The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies pre-operative nares carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in healthy humans as a risk factor for the development of surgical site infection (SSI). It is carried in the nares of 20–30% of humans.1 Infection control and microbiology staff require sensitive and inexpensive methods to facilitate the rapid identification of pathogens such as S. aureus.2
